UP Asian Center, UPM Area Studies hold forum on democracy, political violence

The UP Asian Center is co-organizing with the Indonesian Embassy and the UP Manila Social Science (Area Studies) program, a discussion forum on "Democracy and Political Violence: Lessons Learned from Indonesia and the Philippines" on November 3, 2009 (Tuesday), 2-5 p.m at the Heritage Hotel, Pasay City. The forum marks 60th year anniversary of RP-Indonesian Relations.

Objectives of the forum are to:
  1. Review the contemporary issues of democracy in Indonesia and the Philippines,
  2. Discuss examples and forms of political violence posing threats to democracy,
  3. Explore common and divergent perceptions of the issues and take into account the lessons learned from Indonesia and the Philippines.
Speakers include former COMELEC Commissioner Mehol Kiram Sadain, and DOJ Undersecretary Ricardo Blancaflor. An Indonesian scholar will be coming in from Jakarta to make the presentation on Indonesia's experiences.

Social science students and the public at large are enjoined to participate in this forum.
